Band: Blood Money
From: Birmingham, UK
Their formation story:
(Sam, guitar): “So me and Jack played in separate bands (Nerve Agent & Stranglehold) and always hung around. One day he rang me and said he wanted to come to my house, have a few beers, and record a riff he had in his head.
“From there we ended up writing “Hate the Game” in an hour or so, and from there just decided we needed to start a band from it and immediately thought of Alec, Alfie and George. So it’s Alfie on vocals, myself and Jack on guitar, Alec on bass and George on drums.”
Their sound in their own words:
(Jack, guitar): “When we first started writing for this, we kept looking at Integ as a blueprint; however, I think that’s a ‘looser’ connection. Some of the reviews in Krate have said they can hear a bit of a Death Threat similarity and I kinda see that. Realistically though our sound is distinctly UK. It’s distinctly Birmingham, and that’s how we want to sound.”
Latest release info:
(Sam): “After Jack came to my house and recorded what became “Hate the Game”, we sorted the lineup out and kept demoing. We have a huge file on Pro-Tools with all the songs we’ve wrote for it on it along with loads of throwaway riffs. Just kinda just went through what we thought were the best and funnest ones to play and worked on those some more in the practice room or all together.
“In terms of lyrics, a lot of Alfie’s themes are around being working class, government and police corruption, you know the usual stuff. Along with a song about watching Love Island on the sofa with your partner.
“We recorded it live in the studio all playing together at once and then dubbed the vocals after with Jake ‘Money’ Murray of Just Noise Audio - keeping it old school in a way and making it feel more natural.”
Future plans:
(Jack): “We’ve written most of the second release. I’d say four songs are in their V1.0 state and a few others are in their ‘idea’ or ‘skeleton’ state. The idea is to get back into the studio with Jake again and just record everything we’ve got written, curate the songs properly and have another five song demo to drop and then keep the others aside for other bits if we like them enough.
“Apart from that we’ve got beers to drink, accas to put on now that the Prem is nearly back and other Brum shit to do.”
What other bands from their region should we check out?
(Sam): “Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Duran Duran, UB40, Devilman, Mike Skinner, Musical Youth and Electric Light Orchestra.
“In all seriousness, we all play in different bands such as Nerve Agent and Stranglehold which have each been about a little while now. Other than those check out Powermove who released a class demo on Counterculture around the same time as us - also check out Ordeal, Cruelty and Black Mould.
“Always up for people making more bands and encouraging kids to get into it. Four of us in the band book shows in the local area and are trying our best to platform bands made by those who show up week in, week out, no matter what band is playing.”
(Jack): “More Brum kids need to start more bands so A. I don’t have to play in every band and B. I can put more Brum bands on shows.”
Demo '26 is available on CD via Guillotine Records.
