New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Masterpiece

Band: Masterpiece
From: Stockholm, Sweden

Their formation story:
(Kai, bass): "I met Daniel (vocals) in 2021 through an unofficial straight edge badminton club when I first moved to Stockholm from London which is a very wholesome start to a friendship. Last spring we spoke about starting a straight edge band primarily to help the efforts to put on an Edge Day show in Stockholm that included local bands.

"We started practicing with Jonas (Big Joe) on drums, originally ripping off heavier bands like Strain, Undertow, and Morning Again. But it didn’t feel right and if there’s one thing Sweden already has covered it’s metalcore. So we switched up the vibe, recorded our demo as a three-piece and then brought in Lance on guitar to round out the lineup and save Daniel from going full Billy Joe Armstrong."

Their sound in their own words:
"Cosplaying as a '00s Lockin’ Out band with a Swedish accent. It’s supposed to be a fun, slightly tongue in cheek band and we have plenty of funny discussions at band practice about toeing the line between goofy and corny. Maybe they’re the same thing or maybe it doesn’t matter at all…you decide!"

Latest release info:
"Ye olde classic 4-track hardcore demo! Daniel recorded us onto his laptop at our practice space and Erik Lang Koppen (Existence) mixed and mastered it. Fun, bouncy riffs and sincere and spirited lyrics. It’s Daniel’s first time doing vocals in a hardcore band in a long time so we weren’t sure what we were even going to get from him but it worked out."

Future plans:
"I think everyone is down to play as many shows as possible. The hardcore scene in Stockholm and Sweden as a whole is up there with the best in the world so it feels great to be a part of that lineage and to contribute to keeping a good thing going. We play our first show in May at Alive and Well festival in Stockholm and the only other thing that we have booked in is that fateful Stockholm Edge Day in October.

"Big dreams of putting out a record on Quality Control HQ (the world’s best record label) one day. Free Ola and all political prisoners. Befria Palestina."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"Bulls Shit, Akimbo, Slip, Ceaseless, and First Warning!"
