Band: Narrow Path
From: Okanagan Valley, British Columbia
Their formation story:
(John Salazar, vocals): “Around this time last year, I bought a guitar and started teaching myself how to play and write riffs. I’d show them to Noah Gosling, and he always found a way to elevate them. He had riffs of his own, and I had lyrics I’d been writing for a while and wanted to take a shot at being a frontman.
“At the time, there were only one or two active hardcore bands in the Okanagan, so we figured we should start something ourselves.”
Their sound in their own words:
“We’re definitely rooted in the heavier side of 2000s and early 2010s hardcore. Some of our biggest influences would be No Warning, Trapped Under Ice, and Cold World.”
Latest release info:
“Our new record is called Beneath the Sun. It’s six songs: ‘Dust,’ ‘Oasis,’ ‘Sand,’ ‘Valley,’ ‘Chasm,’ and ‘Mirage.’ A lot of it was written between Lent and Easter this year.“Thematically, it draws a lot from Ecclesiastes and the idea of life ‘under the sun.’ There’s a lot about desire, dissatisfaction, isolation, faith, loss, and trying to find something lasting when eventually everything, good and bad, passes away.
“The Okanagan became part of the imagery naturally. The heat, dust, lake, mountains, and valley all found their way into what I was writing. Hopefully, underneath all the complaining and existential thoughts, there’s some gratitude for how short life is.”
Future plans:
“Whatever feels natural, really. We’re not going to force anything. The big goals would be to get some physical releases made and play more shows outside the Okanagan.
“We’re pretty open to going wherever people want to see us, both inside and outside the valley.”
What other bands from their region should we check out?
“It’s still a relatively small scene compared to Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton, but I think that’s part of what makes what’s happening here exciting. People are hungry for it.
“Shoutout to Pure Heaven, Losing It All, Lakeside Amusement Park, Empty Chamber, and Putrid Brew. Shoutout to the Straight Edge.”
