Band: Spitballin
From: Hitchin & Cambridge, UK
Their formation story:
(Lou, drums): “We formed out of a few different bands local to us - we had all played together in different groups already so it felt natural to bring it together. Jared, Gabe and I grew up together and met Tom through shows at our home Venue. We wanted a band that could play straight up riffy hardcore, so Spitballin was formed to scratch that itch.”
Their sound in their own words:
“We are a big riffy metallic hardcore kinda band. We all listen to quite different music outside of the band, so there’s influences from Merauder to Botch to Deftones, but also The Cure and bands like Coheed and Cambria.
"We like to be able to include some elements you might not find in other hardcore bands, but it always ends up heavy and hard. Jared’s lyrics are always dark, but then he will throw in a Dr. Seuss reference so it can be fun to pick apart what he’s writing.”
Latest release info:
“The EP is the first selection of songs we wrote together. We had different sections from previous bands and failed groups - spent a while duct-taping these together and then polished them off. We wanted to include the kinds of hardcore we loved to listen to - there’s the black metal influence at the start of 'Lull,' and then the stompy two-step vibes of G.L.O.S.S. in 'Old Structures/New Horizons.'
"We just wanted to include all the best we had from our first few months as a band.”
Future plans:
“We want to gig as much as possible in the upcoming year, would be nice to get a tour in with some of the other bands we are around. Maybe another longer release - we are writing at the moment and an album would be wicked to get out in front of people.”
What other bands from your region should we check out?
“Affray are sick, just released their debut EP, and it’s banging old-school hardcore punk. They’re also made up of members from Cut and Run Collective, shout out to them for putting us on some of our favourite gigs we have played.
"Death Goals are the sickest queercore band around right now - discords with meaning and emotion is what the world needs. Trading Hands (no longer local to us but still sick) just released an EP which is their best to date. Wicked power violence nonsense music.”
