New Hardcore Band Spotlight: Switchblades

Band: Switchblades
From: Massachusetts

Their formation story:
(Sean Haidul, vocals): "The band started about 10 or so years ago. It was initially myself, Matt Marcel and Sarah Holler. At the time, we had everything pretty much recorded besides vocals and leads. Then life took some twists and turns as it usually does. Sarah passed away, and it was a hard thing to finish so things just kind of faded.

"Flash forward to about a year ago and I talked to Matt about getting back on the horse with the project. Matt runs his own studio out of Worcester, MA (Marcel’s Shred Shed) so we just got things moving and re-recorded everything. Matt got a session drummer, Devin McGrath, who killed it for the recording and here we are. Now we have a full live lineup."

Their sound in their own words:
"I would say Blood for Blood meets Slapshot meets Best Wishes-era Cro-Mags. I am a '90s-era hardcore kid so that stuff is where my head goes for the riffs. Matt is all about the thrash and crossover so you can certainly hear his influence mixed in for sure, especially with his leads."

Latest release info:
"The goal with the EP was just to make fast hardcore with some straight to-the-point lyrics. No Bullshit. The themes are personal to me and focus on depression, addiction, politics, religion, etc."

Future plans:
"Most of us are a little older so there are of course family and life commitments, but we are down for whatever and ready to rip some shows. We got some more music written that we will plan to record at some point too."

What other bands from their region should we check out?
"There’re so many great bands out there now but Hard Target, Clock Out, and Wisdom and War from Worcester are all rad. Haywire and Burden (the Oi! band) from Boston rule. Back of the Neck from the South Shore. And of course, Matt’s other band, the legendary Overcast."
