Hazing Process: Torena’s Julien Urias Has a New Band—and It Rips

The 805 is where it’s at. As of last week, the Nardcore scene has a new member: Hazing Process.

Comprised of members of the Oxnard hardcore scene from bands such as Torena and Detach, the newcomers released their demo this past Friday, aptly titled Burn. With killer artwork by the homie Eric and recorded by Dead Heat guitarist Vincent Amador at Room Eleven, the demo is laced with four tracks clocking in at under 5 minutes... You know what it sounds like.

I reached out to my friend Julien Urias—the mastermind behind Hazing Process—for a quick chat about the new project.

Hey Julien, what’s up? For new readers, could you please introduce yourself?

Waddup dog! I'm from Oxnard, California, and have been in a couple of bands. Torena is the most notable, but currently I'm in a punk band called Disband and another project that is on its way. You'll hear that one soon.

So, Leo Lopez (Detach) told me Hazing Process is your brainchild—how did this come to be? Also, tell me about the name. I'm intrigued by it.

Yes, that is correct. Hazing Process started as just a song I recorded on my phone. When I showed it to some of my friends, it received a warm reception, so I got inspired to write more songs, and that's how the demo came to be.

As for the name, it was original and sounded abrasive in a way that didn't seem like it was trying too hard, so I stuck with it. I also had the name for a couple of years and wanted to use it.

What's it like playing with Leo? Also, who else plays in Hazing Process?

Currently, it's Leonardo Lopez (Ceramik, Detach) and Julian Hess (Watch You Fall). I asked Julian on December 14, 2025, at For the Children. I wanted someone who could blast and play double kick but also loved punk music. That can be difficult because you could have a drummer who kills at drums for extreme music but doesn't like Void or Poison Idea.

As for Leo, I asked him when we were on tour together and he was playing bass in Ceramik. I liked his bass tone.

I hear some Scarab, Nails, and even some sprinkles of Rot in Hell. What were you listening to when writing the demo?

A lot of my friends' and peers' bands inspired me. Ingrown and Scarab are influences for sure, but I was also bumping a lot of crust bands like Skitsystem, Disrupt, and Assück, plus a lot of grindcore and death metal.

So, having just released a killer demo, what’s next for Hazing Process?

Just to play shows and make music.

Any shoutouts you’d like to make?

Cola Boyy forever. Rest in peace, Joe Rivas.
