La Haine is a Berlin band that moves between abrasive, confrontational passages and sudden bursts of melody. “I’d say it’s for fans of L7, Gouge Away, Soul Glo and Scowl, with a fairly raw, UK-leaning sound,” vocalist EDIE. tells No Echo.
The band started as EDIE.’s solo project with an EP in 2023. After hearing the songs, drummer Antoine got in touch, and bassist Elia joined soon after. Together, they recorded the second EP, SPILLING RAW. When Elia moved on to other projects, guitarist Lu and bassist Letis came in at the start of 2026, rounding out the current lineup.
While EDIE. points to artists including Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey, and Frank Carter as influences on her vocal approach, Antoine traces part of La Haine’s musical DNA to the sounds the members grew up hearing. “There’s definitely a strong influence of the ’90s because it’s the sound we grew up with,” he explains. “It’s like a core DNA component that is subconscious, while contemporary hardcore bands fuel our approach to songwriting.”
Lu offers a considerably more economical description of the band: “If the Pixies played hardcore.”
La Haine released the SPILLING RAW's opening track, "Fierce," to whet the appetite.
SPILLING RAW was recorded DIY in Berlin and pressed locally at Objects. It shifts between aggressive rhythms and melodic sections, always anchored by EDIE.’s vocals. “The emotions are right on the surface, and I think you can feel that on the record,” she says. “Conceptually, I write lyrics that are quite open and free to interpretation because I like leaving the listener space to make the phrases and words their own.”
Antoine describes the resulting sound as “urgent, sweaty and abrasive,” but that aggression only tells part of the story. “It sounds like us: human beings with a strong shell hiding a soft squishy heart,” he says. “The blend of aggressive beats and melodic parts is the direct translation of how we react to the world.”
La Haine will spend the rest of 2026 playing shows. A demo is planned for early 2027, with more studio time and festival dates to follow later that year.
As for what drives the band in the immediate future, the answer is considerably simpler: “We just love playing, playing, playing. We all love being on stage. It’s our happy place.”
